LPBF – Laser Powder Bed Fusion | Metal 3D Printing Technology

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is an advanced metal additive manufacturing technology that produces precise, high-performance metal parts by selectively melting thin layers of metallic powder with a powerful laser.

Also known as PBF-LB/M (Powder Bed Fusion of Metals using a Laser Beam), this industrial 3D printing process enables the production of complex geometries, lightweight structures, and functional components that can be difficult or expensive to manufacture using traditional methods.

How Does Laser Powder Bed Fusion Work?

The LPBF process begins with a digital 3D model, which is divided into thin layers using specialized build preparation software. A thin layer of metal powder is spread across the build platform, and a laser selectively melts the powder according to the geometry of the part.

The build platform then lowers, a new layer of powder is applied, and the process repeats until the complete metal component is produced. Manufacturing takes place inside a controlled atmosphere to limit oxidation.

Materials Used in LPBF Metal 3D Printing

Laser Powder Bed Fusion supports a wide range of industrial metal alloys, depending on the machine and qualified process parameters:

  • Stainless steel: mechanical components, tooling, and industrial parts.
  • Aluminum alloys: lightweight structures and functional prototypes.
  • Titanium alloys: aerospace, medical, and high-performance applications.
  • Nickel-based superalloys: components requiring resistance to high temperatures and demanding environments.
  • Tool steels: molds, inserts, and specialized manufacturing tools.

Advantages of LPBF Technology

  • Manufacturing of complex internal channels and intricate geometries.
  • Production of functional metal prototypes and end-use components.
  • Design freedom for lightweight and topology-optimized structures.
  • Reduced material waste compared with many subtractive manufacturing processes.
  • Suitable for customized parts, low-volume production, and industrial applications.

Industrial Applications of Laser Powder Bed Fusion

LPBF metal 3D printing is widely used in aerospace, automotive engineering, medical technology, industrial tooling, robotics, and product development.

It is particularly valuable for rapid prototyping, complex metal components, customized manufacturing, and small-batch production.

LPBF vs. SLS: What Is the Difference?

Although both technologies use a powder bed, LPBF fully melts metal powder using a laser, while conventional Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) typically processes polymer powders. LPBF is also commonly associated with the commercial terms SLM (Selective Laser Melting) and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering).

Industrial metal 3D printers such as the AddUp FormUp 350 use LPBF technology to manufacture accurate, complex metal components for professional applications.
