SIAT Solid Space Fabrication and Prototyping Lab: Empowering Innovation at SFU Unlock hands-on creativity and bring your ideas to life at the SIAT Solid Space Fabrication and Prototyping Lab. Located at Simon Fraser University, this cutting-edge facility supports SIAT students and faculty in transforming digital designs into tangible prototypes. ________________________________________ Location and Access • Rooms: SRYC 3701 & 3702, Podium 3, across from the SFU IT Service Desk • Production Technologist Office: SRYC 3703 (inside the entrance to 3700) • Access: Card or key entry, by appointment only • Lab Hours: Monday–Thursday, 9:00am–4:30pm ________________________________________ What the SIAT Solid Space Lab Offers Digital Fabrication Equipment: • Shopbot Desktop Max: 36" x 24" CNC router for precision cutting and shaping • Universal Laser Cutters: 48" x 24" dual laser and 32" x 18" models for plastics, wood, textiles, and more • 3D Printers: Stratasys F370 (ABS, TPU, ASA), Ultimaker, and Dremel (PLA) • Shaper Origin: Handheld CNC-type portable router Manual Fabrication Tools: • Sawstop table saw & router table (Bosch router) • Felder euro-style band saw • Benchtop mill & variable speed drill press • Festool mitre saw & track saw • Assorted handheld tools: routers, jigsaws, drills, etc. Please Note: • No planers or jointers—solid lumber projects may require external resources • No spray finishing or most metalworking due to space/resource limitations ________________________________________ Lab Usage and Booking • Appointments Required: Email [email protected] to reserve lab time • Supervision: All users must be supervised by Solid Space staff during in-person work • Eligibility: SIAT undergraduate & graduate students, faculty, and researchers ________________________________________ Safety Training Requirements • For 3D Printing & Laser Cutting Services: Email formatted files to [email protected] (fees may apply; subject to course priorities) • For In-Person Machine Use: • Complete online Canvas safety course • Attend in-person shop safety orientation (scheduled via Canvas or by request) • Note: Safety training cut-off dates each semester—plan ahead ________________________________________ Lab Fees • Included for IAT 233, IAT 336, IAT 437: Basic material and limited 3D printing covered at registration • Others: Fees may apply; contact the production technologist for details • Payment: Research account charge, cash, or cheque to SIAT office staff (Podium 2) ________________________________________ Why Choose SIAT Solid Space Lab? • State-of-the-art CNC, laser cutting, and 3D printing equipment • Expert support and safety training from a dedicated production technologist • Collaborative, innovation-driven environment for academic and research projects • Convenient location and flexible booking for SIAT community members ________________________________________ How to Get Started 1.
