Frequently Asked Questions

Forget about your doubts!

What is Scan And Make?

At Scan And Make, every definition is tight. From creating simple everyday 3D objects to complex robotics, there is nothing our Makers can´t do. Scan And Make is a platform for creativity, art and technology, in other words, it is the common ground for Artists, Makers and Users. Let me explain. Artists inherent creativity enables them to create amazing works of art. Makers have the skills and the tecnology to turn those works of art into files available to download on the platform. Users are looking to materialise their personal ideas, with specific colors, sizes and textures. The artists vision and the makers skills, can make this a reality. Together they can make great things happen!

Who are Makers and Users?

Scan And Make is a platform where Makers and Users can come together to meet their needs for prototyping. Makers are the lucky owners of: Equipment such as 3D Printers, Laser Cutter, CNC milling machines and/or Specific skills such as 3D files correction, 3D design, Arduino and many more. Users are all types of individuals; architects, students, industrial designers, artists, hobbyists, DIY lovers, the list is endless! Basically they are individuals who can find on the platform the means to realise their ideas at an affordable price.

How does Scan And Make work?

Users of the website can post a project containing all the infos needed for the Makers to calculate their production costs. As soon as a project is posted, an auction begins and every Maker can participate by making their offer (or quote). If Users are interested in a particular Maker they can also directly contact him for a quote or ask him to take part in an auction. All transactions are processed through and protected by PayPal. Once the User has chosen the offer he prefers, they can contact each other privately in order to work out the details and proceed with the production. The price agreed upon will be withheld from the User´s account through Paypal until the goods or service has been delivered, after which Scan And Make will release the funds in favour of the Maker. All transactions are processed through and protected by PayPal.

What is 3D printing?

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing. It refers to various processes used to create a three dimensional object. In order to do so, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry, making the possibilities endless. Here you can find you more informations

What is 3D design?

3D models represent a physical body using a collection of points in 3D space, connected by various geometric entities such as triangles, lines and curved surfaces. 3D models can be created by hand algorithmically (procedural modelling) or scanned. Almost all 3D models can be divided into two categories: Solid: These models define the volume of the object they represent (like a rock). These are more realistic, but more difficult to build. Solid models are mostly used for nonvisual simulations such as medical and engineering simulations . Shell/boundary: These models represent the surface, the boundary of the object, not its volume. These are easier to work with than solid models. Almost all visual models used in games and film are shell models.

What is 2D Design?

2D design is the creation of flat or two-dimensional images for applications such as electrical engineering, mechanical drawings, architecture, Laser cutting and CNC Milling.

What is 3D Scanning?

3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a line of laser light. 3D scanning is also known as 3D Imaging, Laser Scanning, Laser Digitizing, and Digital Shape Sampling & Processing (DSSP). 3D scanning can capture data of very small objects all the way up to full size aircraft and buildings. It can be used for reverse engineering, computer-aided inspection, or simply documenting the shape for future use.

What is Arduino?

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform or board and the software used to program it. It is designed to make electronics more accessible to artists, designers, hobbyists and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

What is CAD?

CAD is a software used to design products such as electronic circuit boards in computers and other devices. It is used by architects, engineers, drafters, artists, and others to create precision drawings or technical illustrations. CAD software can be used to create two-dimensional (2D) drawings or three-dimensional (3D) models.

What is CNC Milling?

CNC milling is a specific form of computer numerical controlled machining. Milling itself is a machining process similar to both drilling and cutting, and able to achieve many of the operations performed by cutting and drilling machines. Like drilling, milling uses a rotating cylindrical cutting tool.

What is PCB Design and Production?

Would you like to make your own cell phone, computer or robot? In order to do so you would want to make a printed circuit board, but if you dont know how to, there´s no need to worry, a Maker can make it for you.

What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games. Raspberry Pi also has the ability to interact with the outside world, and has been used in a wide array of digital maker projects, from music machines and parent detectors to weather stations and tweeting birdhouses with infra-red cameras.

What is Reverse Engineering?

Reverse engineering is taking apart an object to see how it works in order to duplicate or enhance the object. There are various uses for Reverse Engineering: Software reverse engineering involves reversing a program’s machine code back into the source code that it was written in, using program language statements. It is done to retrieve the source code of a program because the source code was lost, to study how the program performs certain operations, to improve the performance of a program, to fix a bug identify malicious content in a program such as a virus or to adapt a program written for use with one microprocessor for use with another. Hardware reverse engineering involves taking apart a device to see how it works. For example, to understand how a specific processor works. Another type of reverse engineering involves producing 3D images of manufactured parts when a blueprint is not available in order to remanufacture the part. To reverse engineer a part, the part is measured by a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). As it is measured, a 3-D wire frame image is generated and displayed on a monitor. After the measuring is complete, the wire frame image is dimensioned.
