FabLab Kerala Trivandrum – Digital Fabrication, 3D Printing, CNC and Prototyping

FabLab Kerala in Trivandrum is a digital fabrication and prototyping facility supported by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and the Government of Kerala. Located at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, the FabLab provides access to technologies for 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, electronics, precision milling and digital fabrication.

The FabLab initiative was developed in association with the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT and the Fab Foundation, connecting Kerala's maker and startup ecosystem with the international Fab Lab network.

Digital Fabrication and Rapid Prototyping in Kerala

FabLab Kerala is a technical platform for innovation, invention and rapid prototyping. It enables students, startups, entrepreneurs, researchers and makers to transform digital designs into physical objects and develop prototypes using professional fabrication equipment.

The facility supports experimentation and product development while encouraging entrepreneurship, practical learning and knowledge sharing within Kerala's technology ecosystem.

3D Printing at FabLab Kerala

3D printing is one of the key capabilities available at FabLab Kerala. The documented equipment includes the Stratasys Dimension SST and Ultimaker 2, providing tools for producing physical models and prototypes directly from digital 3D designs.

3D printing allows users to rapidly manufacture prototypes, evaluate designs and iterate on product ideas before moving to further stages of development.

CNC Milling and ShopBot

For larger fabrication projects, the FabLab includes a ShopBot large-scale CNC milling system. CNC machining enables computer-controlled fabrication of parts based on digital designs and expands the possibilities for prototyping and custom manufacturing.

A Roland Modela precision mini mill is also part of the documented equipment, providing high-resolution milling capabilities for smaller and more detailed projects.

Laser Cutting and Engraving

The laser cutter at FabLab Kerala enables users to cut and engrave suitable materials directly from digital files. Laser technology is useful for prototyping, model making, enclosures, design projects and other applications requiring accurate computer-controlled cutting.

Electronics and Circuit Prototyping

FabLab Kerala also supports electronics development and circuit prototyping. Electronic components, tools and testing equipment allow makers and developers to combine digitally fabricated parts with electronic systems when developing functional prototypes and smart devices.

Vinyl Cutting, Molding and Casting

Additional fabrication capabilities include a vinyl plotter, sand blasting, molding and casting. Together with 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting and electronics, these technologies provide users with multiple ways to turn an idea into a physical prototype.
